Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen was a Swiss-born
French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.
Steilen often incorporated animals, specifically
cats, into his posters advertising businesses such
as cafes in bohemian areas of Paris. Cats
appealed to Steinlen for their charm,
movement, and character, as well as for their
symbolic properties.
